Vernon T. Braley

November 30, 1924 March 1, 2008

On Sunday, November 30, 2008, several of our senior members, both from Rocky Knoll and Pine Hill, attended a breakfast honoring our friend, Vern Braley.  Also in attendance was Vern’s wife, Marilyn, Vern’s daughter Loretta (with husband John), and Vern’s daughter Kathleen.
Vern so loved the game of golf that he and Mr. Kingsbury built and ran the Riverview Golf Course on the main road in Winterport for years. Although he loved to fish and hunt, as the years past he golfed more and more - it was his passion. When asked where he would like to be he would always say “golfing”.
We knew Vern as a friendly, quiet gentleman, who enjoyed having fun on the course…collecting quarters in side bets from those whose chose unwisely to bet with him.
Vern was the type of guy who would turn off the key in your cart while you were making
a shot, and you would come back and think it had broken down.
He had a golf swing that most of us envied, and a putter about 18” long that he could do magic with, 40-50 yards from the green. Vern’s trademark was his familiar grin and those sparkling eyes, when he was putting people up to pranks or doing them himself.
At the conclusion of the breakfast, Rocky Knoll Country Club presented three lifetime memberships in Vern’s memory to Harold Hutchins, Gene Bowden, and Frank Daigle.  All are senior members who, like Vern, are well respected by both the membership and management at Rocky Knoll.
As his wife, Marilyn stated: “He lived respected and died regretted.”

So long friend, we miss you.
